These extra content fields are more commonly referred to as Custom Fields. The content that is placed within these can then be pulled out onto your website by a developer.
The Advanced Custom Fields plugin allows you to create a variety of different editable fields which will make editing your website through WordPress a dream. The field variations they support include:
The overarching benefit to using ACF, over bespoke hand-written custom fields using PHP, is that this plugin was created by a large team of developers who have refined it over the years to be as good as it is today. It is constantly updated, so there’s never a security risk and you can use it for pretty much anything on your website.
You can have complete control of your website and can edit every single part of it, and it’s ridiculously easy to use.
Once you’ve got the plugin is installed, you can add a new field within WordPress (no code required), and choose what the field is for, text for example. Once this has been done you decide where you want the field to go, on a post, page, taxonomy etc.
Once you’ve got the field set up in WordPress, access the file where you want to replace the hardcoded information. The information is now stored in the database, so you can go ahead and replace this with a simple bit of PHP:
View the ACF website documentation page to find out how to use every single type of field, and which field you should be using for your dynamic content.
It’s free! The standard version will give you everything you need to make a standard website editable. You can choose to pay a bit extra for ACF Pro which allows even more depth to editing for larger websites. We install ACF Pro as standard on all of our projects.
Advanced Custom Fields Pro includes some pretty cool extra features such as:
These extra features are incredibly useful. In particular the repeater field, which allows you to create a set of sub fields which can be repeated again and again whilst editing content!
Any type of field can be added as a sub field which allows you to create and manage very customised data with ease.
We believe in making a website as easy as possible for a client to use. Our clients want to be able to manage content themselves, and ACF allows this to happen within WordPress with just a few clicks.
