Why use an SSL certificate?

In an age where security is at the forefront of everybody’s mind, it’s becoming more important by the day that your website is protected from threats and keeps transmitted information encrypted.

An SSL (Secure Socket Layer) certificate establishes an encrypted link between a web server and the website user. This ensures that all data passed between the web server and browser remains private. The data sent and received could be contact form information, usernames and passwords or even credit card details. It’s absolutely imperative that if you’re collecting personal or financial details from website users that you secure their details using a https connection, rather than the normal http connection which will stop hackers and identity thieves from gaining access to sensitive data, or gaining access to your website.

The https connection also provides authentication, which means you can relax knowing that you are sending information through to the correct server and it’s not being lost. SSL certificates also form part of PCI compliance, as customer data is protected when it is being sent to and from the web server.

Many servers are often used when you’re browsing a single website – often they’re all processing different tasks. Users are not aware of the identity of these servers however they have developed trust in the padlock symbol they see in their browser when using a https connection. It’s proven that they’re more likely to purchase or fill in personal details on your website if you’ve got an SSL certificate.

It’s worth noting that Google have now adapted their algorithm to favour websites with an SSL certificate, and the connection time is also quicker!
